Good morning, readers!
Glad you’ve stopped by. Take a minute. Blink a little. Got those eye drops ready? (I DO.) Good. Now, relax that brain a little, we’re going back in time…
Read-A-Thon has taught me a few things. Namely, 2am is NOT always the best time to pick up a historical epic covering a couple millennia, in itty bitty type. It is a good time to pull some beloved children’s books off the shelf. Helps break up the monotony of plain old adult language. They’ve helped me get through some of the longer hours. Can you say 18pt font, anyone?
I’m an Anne of Green Gables girl. Nothing can beat that imaginative redhead and her crazy adventures. The Boxcar Children, the Ramona books, and Hank the Cowdog were all childhood favorites of mine as well. As for more current titles, I’m a little rusty. It’s been a long time since I perused the children’s and young adult sections of my local bookstore (hello, Children’s Lit course in college that had a 500 book reading requirement).
What were some of your favorite children’s books when you were younger? Do you have any new favorites now that you’re an adult? Have you included any children’s or YA titles in your Read-A-Thon stack this year? Leave a comment and share!

This is a mini-challenge for Dewey’s Read-A-Thon. This challenge will be open for entries (comments) for 3 hours. You must be signed up for Read-A-Thon to be eligible. After time is up, comments will close and a winner will be chosen using Random Integer Generator. The prize for this mini-challenge is a grab bag of Christmas/holiday themed titles by Louisa May Alcott, Mary Higgins Clark, and most likely some other folks as I’m fairly certain I’m going to throw in some other fun stuff for you! U.S. residents only, please.

My faves are in my update post. Yay for kids’ books!
I read Nancy Drew books (older Nancy Drew) when I was younger, along with a lot of YA fantasy. I think my favorites were The Dark is Rising sequence and stuff by Tamora Pierce, along with too many other books to list. I still love to read all of these books every so often.
On my pile of books to read that are YA/children’s are Wizard’s Holiday by Diane Duane, The Pinhoe Egg by Diana Wynne Jones, Mixed Magics by Diana Wynne Jones, Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman, Melting Stones by Tamora Pierce and Seeing Red by Frank Beddor.
Oh how I love Anne of Green Gables! Anne is one of my favorite childhood heroines. And Gilbert. Don’t get me started. Anyway, one of my other favorites I read not too long ago – The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I remember reading and adoring Kit Tyler for her audacity. In my pile today are two Judy Blume books, neither of which I read as a kid. I certainly love a good children’s book!
My favorite kids book is There is A Boy in the Girls Bathroom. It was such a fun book, and it always stayed with me. I also read all of Judy Blume’s books, which were super fantastic.
Right now in my readathon pile I have a Sarah Dessen book, Just Listen.
I adored the Little House on the Prairie series as well as Patricia C. Wrede’s The Enchanted Forest Chronicles series. My mom used to read aloud to my siblings and me, and I think I loved Joan Lowry Nixon’s The Orphan Train Quartet best! The first book I read today was The Phantom Tollbooth, which I’ve not read before. A great way to start off the day!
I loved The Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper when I was young – The Grey King was the first book that got me interested in the Arthurian story. But her WW2 novel, Dawn of Fear, was the first book that truly shattered me.
I visited Green Gables during a trek across Canada – my best friend and I wandered down Lover’s Lane looking for Gilbert Blythe
I’m sure other people have mentioned this (I don’t have enough time to weed through all the comments) but Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is my go to classic and I have always admired Jo. If I could be any character, it would be Jo.
Other favorites (I’m a children’s and teen librarian, so bare with me) include Tamora Pierce, Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, Laurie Halse Anderson, Sharon Draper, and my newest favorite is Gayle Forman’s If I Stay.
My entire stack of to-be-read books for Read-a-thon are young adult and children’s books! I’m looking forward to finishing some of them
This mini-challenge caught my eye this morning and got me to remembering all the books I read as a child. I had a lot of surgeries as a kid, so couldn’t get out and play as much as the others, but boy did I do a lot of traveling – in my mind!!! Books were my best friends, and favorites like The Happy Hollisters, The Bobbsey Twins, Cherry Ames, Nancy Drew and others were my playmates growing up!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane with this challenge – it has made me smile!
My favorite books when I was a child that I can remember I loved having my parents read to me were The Little House by Virginia Lee Burke and The Velveteen Rabbit. When I was a little older, I adored the Little House series, Little Women, The Prydain Chronicles, The Wizard of Oz books, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle….I could go on and on! Of course, my favorite YA/MG books now are the Harry Potter books and I’ve read some great YA books, like The Dark Divine by Bree Despain and Shadow Hills by Anastasia Hopcus. I do not have any YA books in my read-a-thon pile this time.
I am enjoying a lot of children’s books through my younger son. He loves to read and he loves to read to me so he is always reading me all kinds of children’s books! Last night was The Book Report from the Black Lagoon. He is going to do the next read-a-thon with me!
I grew up on the Nancy Drew books as a young girl. Of course, before that it was the fables’ picture books – the kinds that girls love – Snow White, Cinderella, etc. But after I began to read books, I totally devoured the Nancy Drew mysteries. Oh, how much I dreamed of being someone like ND! She was my role model, and for quite a while I actually entertained the idea of being her. I would look for mysteries in my own home to solve (not kidding, lol). When things went missing (thanks to my forgetfulness), I’d put on my ND cap and start solving the not-crime! I loved it!! Today however, I only have the Harry Potter book 4 in my stack – I’ve been re-reading them this year, and it’s been a while since I picked the HP book.
I didn’t expect to have a good answer for your question, but I’m so glad I stopped to think! Great challenge!
I also adore/d Anne of Green Gables. Anne has always been a girl after my own heart with lots of imagination. The adventures of Mrs. Switch and the Wayside School books also spring to mind. I also had a strange fascination with books about girls in boarding schools.
Anne of Green Gables was a great series. I had such a character-crush on Gilbert! Like many people, I was into the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys series and the Boxcar children. I also adored Watership Down for some reason. I can’t count the number of times I read that book as a kid!
I wish I had read more as a child, but once I did start reading I was obsessived with Harry Potter, I was still a kid when the books came out and reread them constantly.
I’ve been very taken with fairytale inspired novels recently, and while few of them (at least of what I’ve been reading) could be considered YA/Children’s I’d have to say The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman was an instant classic for me. I wish I had a copy because i’d really love to reread it today

I loved the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley as a kid…I’d read them over and over. Also Harriet the Spy, and of course Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Most of my books for the readathon this year are children’s and YA. ^_^ I’m trying to finish Susan Cooper’s Dark is Rising series, and also the Rise of Renegade X by Chelsea Campbell.
I adored Little Women and Nancy Drew when I was younger. I also loved books by Judy Blume and Lois Lowry. My mother had a tattered copy of “Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret” and that was the first book of Ms. Blume that I’ve read. I think I never outgrew my love for young adult fiction. Each time I enter bookstores, I always check out interesting books from that section.
Greatest discoveries: David Levithan and Julie Anne Peters for their fearless depiction of LGBT teens. I think that they’re doing a great job, and I think the world would be a better place if the young’uns read more books from these authors.
Oooh, I have a lot of favourites now and had a lot when I was a child too. Narnia, Babysitter’s Club, Nancy Drew, Anne of Green Gables and many of Roald Dahl’s books – just to mention a few. Narnia and Anne of Green Gables are my favourites still
I’ve added quite a number of YA to my Read-a-thon stack this year – they seem to be the best books to start with and the best books for the late hours. I’m reading Claudia and the Perfect Boy (BSC) and have Tunnelmanden (Danish YA) and The Will of the Empress (Tamora Pierce) on my list for later
What were some of your favorite children’s books when you were younger? Do you have any new favorites now that you’re an adult? Have you included any children’s or YA titles in your Read-A-Thon stack this year? Leave a comment and share!

I have so many childhoos favorites! We’d be here forever if I tried to list them all!
But, I especially loved all things Sharon Creech, Mary Downing Hahn, Mary Higgins Clark, and Willo Davis Roberts!
I also loved Pippi Longstocking and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.
I’ve got a lot of YA books on my shelf to read today, and I’m pretty excited about them all!
Hi, what a great question! I’ve posted about my 1st favourite book on my blog, Graasland.
I really don’t read YA as an adult now. So much else to read!
TNX for the mini-challenge
I adored The Boxcar Children novels! One book was never enough, I would always return to the library for more. I also loved Charlotte’s Web; it was the first book to ever make me cry. Deenie and Forever by Judy Blume were among my favorites as well.
Oh and yes I have a YA novel in my readathon pile. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare!
Oh and if you wanted to read YA, I highly recommend Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta and Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken (fantasy).
My favorite childrens book was Goodnight Moon, though when I got a little older I loved I think her name was Romona and encyclopidia brown.
I love reading MG and YA books and most of the book for the read-a-thon is YA books. My favorite YA book right now is Hearts at Stake by Alyxandra Harvey (all the book in the series are great!!)
Considering I’m 13 years old I’ll go back in time around 5-7yrs of age..Ah childhood books, although my memory is some-what blurry I think my favorite book as a child was Disney Princess’ books. You know the ones with Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora, Belle, and then there was Thumbellina. If I remember correctly my mother read that to me when I was younger. Oh I remember! When my mother and I were packing for our move we were looking through some of my brother’s and my baby stuff. She brought out some how to books. There was one small book in particuilar that I enjoyed having read to myself when I was a toddler…It was a book about counting and it had angels. Explains why I like angels know though at the age that I am. As far as the books I have planned to read currently at the moment for the Read-a-Thon. I plan to read YA novels. Simply because I am a YA. I enjoy any type of genre, and I’ll read almost anything.
I loved the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Trixie Belden was an absolute fav and I have recently shared those books with one of my nieces. I love YA books but sadly have none in my TBR pile for this read-a-thon.
My favorites were the Little House on the Prairie books. I got the whole set for my 9th birthday (or was it 10th? I’m really old and I can’t remember now). That’s when I realized my love for reading. After that I got books as gifts for every birthday and Christmas.
I actually do have some children’s books in my Readathon pile for the late night hour:
Hey, Pancakes!
It Couldn’t Be Worse!
Part-Time Dog
The Great White House Breakout
I read all the time when I was a kid and there were so many favorites. Girl series books included Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Dana Girls, Trixie Belden, Polly French… I also loved Tom Swift, but not the Hardy Boys, for some reason. Nesbit’s books, of course, and Edward Eager. I have one of my favorite Edward Eager books in the stack: Half Magic (for a reread challenge and for sheer pleasure). One of my favorites that’s difficult to find is Loretta Mason Potts by Margaret Chase. I could go on, but I’m supposed to be reading books, not writing them!
* What were some of your favorite children’s books when you were younger? When I was a child, one of my favorite books was Little Black Sambo (click to read my review). He is one of the cleverest children in all of literature.
* Do you have any new favorites now that you’re an adult? I love Miss Rumphius! I didn’t discover her until I was an adult — actually, the book wasn’t even written until I was my children were grown — but I think it’s one of the best books ever written.
* Have you included any children’s or YA titles in your Read-A-Thon stack this year? No, I don’t have any children’s books around this time.
My answers are also posted here: http://bonniesbooks.blogspot.com/2010/10/deweys-24-hour-readathon.html
When I was a child, I loved the typical girl-type classics–Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Little House, Pollyanna. I also loved The Babysitter’s Club seris (still have them and still read them) and the Sweet Valley High books. I still read all of these books especially the classics. They are still as good now as when I was a kid.
Some of my favorite children’s books when I was younger were the Saddle Club series. I absolutely loved the adventures those girls had. As an adult, I love reading YA, so all of the books in my TBR pile for this Read-A-Thon are YA.
I loved Enid Blyton’s The Wishing Chair series. Or even Noddy. Even now I love to browse through her books. I do have a Tintin Album lined up for the readathon!
My response is here.
I loved Roald Dahl as a kid. Ever since our teacher started reading The Witches to us in third grade, I was hooked to his books! My favourites were Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I also loved Louisa May Alcott. I kept reading and re-reading Little Women and An Old-Fashioned Girl at least once a year untile I was 16. I’ve re-read An Old-Fashioned Girl in English recently and it’s still charming. I think Tom Shaw was one of my first bookish crushes, even though I didn’t realize it at the time. Yay for him and Polly!
The first series that pops into mind are the books from Anne of Green Gables. Oh I lurved this series. I actually found a picture of me opening these books as a Christmas present when I was in second grade. My big sister bought me the series and I cherished them for so long. Unfortunately, they got lost during a move in high school, but I did buy a new set. I can never not have them in my own personal library.
Then, there’s the fave author Maurice Sendak. Of course I heart Where the Wild Things Are. A book that I read all the time to my nephews. But the book I hearted more when I was in kindergarten was Chicken Soup with Rice.
There are many other great books, but these were my absolute faves!!!
I grew up knowing and loving Nancy Drew’s mystery stories. In fact, it was Nancy Drew who lured me into reading. I remember my first time in our school library and bumping into one of her mysteries.
I also love Dr. Seuss.
Anyway, to relive that Nancy Drew influence, I am building up my collection of her books.
Unfortunately, I have no YA books in my read-a-thon pile.
I still love my favorite children books, i love HP, find out what i choose here: http://fayeflamereviews.blogspot.com/2010/10/24-hour-read-thon.html
Oh, the children’s books I read…
My absolute favorite series were The Babysitters’ Club, Goosebumps, Ramona, Anne of Green Gables and the Little House books. I had every single one of each of these series (Up until a certain point, for BBC and Goosebumps). The school and public librarians got to know me by the series I read and started (thankfully!) suggesting new books to me!
