This is one of my favorites to sing. It seems that it’s been a selection almost every Christmas service I’ve attended and I love that no matter who is singing it, you can sense the joyfulness behind the words. I don’t know how you can sing this without excitement when you think about the meaning of the lyrics — the Christ Child is born!
Angels We Have Heard on High
based on a traditional French carol known as Les Anges dans nos campagnesAngels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.Refrain:
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?Refrain
Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.Refrain
See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.Refrain
