Since a few of you asked how I get my loose curls, I put together a little tutorial last night. And I even threw in pretty music during the boring bits. Hope you enjoy!

What is the difference in the look if you leave the clamp on?
It sometimes leaves the indentation and it’s just a little bit harder to handle.
Also, if you’ll note in the video that Becca shared, you just won’t get the same kind of curl that I am doing unless you wrap the hair around the barrel.
I LOVED the way your hair looked for Mother’s Day. I wonder if it would work for my hair being so thick… and I’m sure I’d burn myself more than I’d like. I guess I’ll have to stick to my curling procedure for now.
First off for Jolene’s question: http://whoorl.com/archives/9784 Sarah explains how you can curl your hair with the clamp or without and not get the indentation.
I never curl my hair because I’m lazy and I tend to use my flat iron more to do so, heh.
I had a curling iron for about ten years that I loved. It had the built in spirals and always made my hair look fantastic, but it was old and it took forever to do my hair, so I finally threw it out and bought a curling wand with spirals. It came with one of those gloves but I’m hear to tell you, I hate the darn thing. It is made to only fit 2-3 fingers and it’s awkward and I need to be able to feel my hair to curl it, so yeah, think about those things before getting one.
I’m so jealous of your long hair! I haven’t had long hair since my wedding which was 4 years ago. I didn’t get cut everything off until two years ago, but my wedding hair was my longest hair since I was three years old and I miss it terribly, so never cutting my hair off ever again.
You don’t get the indentation, but you also don’t get nearly the same curl. Clamp-free for me!
It’s funny you say that about the flat iron vs. curling because that’s exactly the reason I never use one — I’m too lazy and I feel like I’m doing more damage to my hair.
Thanks for posting this tutorial! I could never get the hang of using a curling iron with a clamp because of not knowing when to open/how to get the hair around the barrel without the clamp being in the way/burning my fingers multiple times on the clamp section/etc. So it’s great to know that part isn’t needed.
A few technical questions, if you don’t mind:
1) Is your hair shorter at the top/front? That looks like it will make a difference to the look (but not the technique).
2) Does your hair naturally part at the side? Mine naturally parts in the middle and nothing I can do will change that, it always finds a way to revert.
I also have a double crown and that makes the sectioning hard to do; the natural split is bottom, left top and right top, rather than just bottom and top. This, when curled, tends to make it stick out too much at the sides and look like a poodle. I should have put the hours in as a teenager to have come up with a plan for this now, rather than have always resorted to the trusty ponytail (that I still resort to now). Which is probably just an irrelevant tangent; you were showing me how you curl your hair, not how to curl mine after all. At least you’ve made me want to try, anyway. And you look very pretty.
Don’t mind at all! I’ll do my best to answer them..
1) Yes, my hair is layered. It may be harder to tell because it’s so dark in the video. Shorter layers on top. I try to section mine according to length. Makes the whole process easier.
You should be fine with a middle part.
2) Yes, the part in my hair is natural and won’t go any other way either
I had to google “double crown.” I think it should still work just fine. How you section it out shouldn’t matter much.
