Listening Lately

This may be a little weird, but I’ve been in a 90s country mood lately.

My mom used to change the station every time this would come on the radio. That did nothing but make me curious about it, so I would watch hours of CMT during the summer hoping to see this video. I want a dress like Patty Loveless wears in it. Don’t you love it? It’s all flowy and white and no one is wearing anything like that right now. I actually think this dress is part of my farmhouse fantasy life.

Warning: the dude’s ponytail is creeptastic and this is a song that glorifies cheating.

Ty Herndon. Forever one of my favorites. What has he been up to lately? Singing “You Can Leave Your Hat On” and none of you told me about it, that’s what.

You won’t find me listening to much of Kenny Chesney’s more recent offerings, but I do love some of his earlier songs.

In case it’s ever a question on Jeopardy — someone once left me a drunken voicemail singing this song. Took me a while to get past that and love this song again, but I have :)

Enough 90s Nashville? Okay.

Caroline County — I love the name. And I think their cover of this song is sweet.

I just like this and some of the lyrics are really lovely.

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up

And when you’re needing your space
To do some navigating
I’ll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

‘Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We’ve got a lot to learn
God knows we’re worth it
No, I won’t give up

Modern country music is juuuuuust starting to cross over into the British chart. Like, Lady Antebellum have had a few songs, and I recognised the Caroline County song too. I love that song!

The Caroline County song is originally performed by Thompson Square, but I like this one a lot. Lady Antebellum are definitely at the top of popular country right now. Country music has taken a very definite pop turn over the past 15-20 years. I like it just fine (I listen to most everything), but I prefer older country music, bluegrass, folk, and honky-tonk styles. “Red Dirt” is another favorite and is gaining quite a bit of popularity — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dirt_(music)

Elizabeth, you’d love the guys I jam with… most of them have played for “the greats.” I love Oklahoma’s musicians and their legacies. (And am honored to be a part of it!) Soooo sorry to hear about your creepy voice mail… yikes. Glad you got past it. How’s your writing going?

How cool! I come from a musical family, but I have a terrible case of stage fright. The one time I stepped out of my comfort zone was when I took a solo performance class in college. Had to sing a few songs in front of an audience…and I didn’t die!

IMO…that is the only good song Chesney ever recorded.

Perhaps this 90s country music thing is going around. I’ve had this song running through my mind for days! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW5UEW2kYvc
