One Cow

I rode around the pastures with Paw Paw the other day and snapped quite a few photos of the cows, but this one is my favorite. I was thinking it would be nice frame a nice, big print of this Charolais for him. He loves his cows and I think this would be special for him. His birthday is coming up in August and I want to have it ready by then. This is a surprise, so no one spill the beans, please!

There are three different versions of the photo that I’ve been working on: color, black and white, and sepia. I think any of them would go fine with the decor in Granny and Paw Paw’s house, but I would like your opinions on which one you prefer. So, there’s a poll below. Pick one, if you don’t mind 🙂

And if you want to tell me what you like about it/why you picked one over another, feel free to comment.

  1. The first one is a wonderful shot! The lighting is perfect. It reminds me of an evening on the farm. If I was choosing it for my Papa I know he personally would like the natural one. I think this is a great gift for your Paw Paw!

  2. The color one is good, but I like the way the cow pops more in the sepia-toned version. In the color one, I think it blends in too much with the grass. I feel like the sky is the focal point of that one, whereas the cow is the thing you’re photographing in the sepia. Isn’t it amazing how color can change the way it looks. The black and white is too bright, and the sepia is more calming.

    1. The black and white one doesn’t look very good here. I think it’s better darker on my other computer.

Funny thing is, I WAS photographing the sky 🙂

  3. Love the composition. She looks almost bashful. I like the full color but I do agree that the cow stands out more in the sepia version. Decisions! I also think the horizon is not quite straight. You might need a tiny crop and like a 20 degree angle up on the right.

Also, if you can afford it, choose a premium print for a large photo. There is a significant difference in sharpness when you order a premium verses regular print. 🙂

    1. Thanks!

The horizon isn’t straight because there is a hill sloping up in the background 🙂 This was taken in bottomland and directly behind me is a 25-30 foot drop down to a creek that runs through my grandparents’ property.

  4. The first one is awesome…just perfect. I don’t understand why people like to rob pictures of color. In this case, it robs it of depth and energy.

  5. I find the sepia version to be most appealing, but for the older generation you’ll never lose with the color version. 🙂
