So, we’ve nearly made it. Just one more installment after this one. Now we’re into the ones that tend to make me weepy or that I have some deep, emotional connection with, so…prepare yourself!
20. The Heart Is Slow To Learn — ???
I mentioned earlier about breaking my rules with a song and this is it. Originally the song was called “Our Kind of Love” and was used in another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, then it was retooled for a “possible Phantom sequel” and I’m pretty sure when it was performed here that’s what they billed it as. At the time I was thrilled because I was at the height of my obsession with that musical (1998, age 14). Now, as you know, many years passed before that would come to fruition. “The Heart Is Slow To Learn” had the lyrics changed and became “Love Never Dies.” The first version of the song that I ever heard remains my favorite.
I’ll never love as I have loved you
Why is love cruel? I wish I knew!
Say what you will, it doesn’t matter
Until I die, there’s only you
19. A Piece Of Sky — Yentl
What “Part Of Your World” was to my childhood, this song was to my adolescence.
Though it’s safer to stay on the ground,
Sometimes where danger lies
There the sweetest of pleasures are found
No matter where I go,
There’ll be memories that tug at my sleeve,
But there will also be
More to question, yet more to believe
Oh tell me where?
Where is the someone who will turn and look at me?
And want to share
My ev’ry sweet-imagined possibility?
18. In His Eyes — Jekyll & Hyde
The Lucy character is my dream to perform and this duet is a big part of the reason.
In his eyes I see a gentle glow,
And that’s where I’ll be safe, I know!
Safe in his arms, close to his heart…
But I don’t know quite where to start…
By looking in his eyes,
Will I see beyond tomorrow?
By looking in his eyes,
Will I see beyond the sorrow
That I feel?
17. A New Life — Jekyll & Hyde
16. Reflection — Mulan
If you were a guest at my wedding, you might have noticed that an instrumental version of this song was played whenever the bridesmaids entered. Now, I chose most of the music for the wedding, that piece included, and I was not thinking about the lyrics whenever I chose to include it. I just thought the music was beautiful! But the song has been one of my favorites forever and I’m sharing the original, longer version of it that wasn’t used in the film. If you listen, I think you’ll understand why it maybe wasn’t the best choice for a wedding.
15. Falling Slowly — Once
I’m not sure that a song could get anymore perfect than this. I loved the film, but haven’t seen the musical yet. Maybe someday.
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black
14. Down Once More / Track Down This Murderer (Final Lair) — Phantom of the Opera
This entire song is worth listening to, but for the sake of brevity (ha!) I’ve cut it down to the portion that I like the best. This may be my favorite part of the entire musical. It’s such an emotional scene!
There’s a bit from 12:00 to 12:48 where it looks like Christine might turn around and stay with him. You can tell she wants to (12:25)! Then that look of…resignation(?) at 12:49 when she decides to go ahead and leave with Raoul. GET AWAY FROM HER, MAN! I think Sierra Boggess brings something to this that I’ve never seen before and I love it.
Also, this makes me want to repurpose my wedding gown into a Christine Daae costume.
13. Someone Like You — Jekyll & Hyde
Another Lucy number and I think it’s my favorite from the musical. And this is the last J&H number on my list, I promise!
12. Climb Ev’ry Mountain — The Sound of Music
11. Oklahoma — Oklahoma!
Do I need to explain? 😉
